FAQ?
What is osteoarthritis & how does it affect the body?" role="heading" aria-level="2
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. It occurs most often in the hands, knees, hips, and spine. OA affects cartilage—the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Cartilage allows bones to glide over each other and absorbs the shock of movement.
What is osteoarthritis (OA)?" role="heading" aria-level="2
OA is also called wear-and-tear arthritis, degenerative arthritis, and degenerative joint disease. A joint is where two bones come together. Cartilage is the protective tissue that covers the ends of the bones. With OA, this cartilage breaks down, causing the bones within the joint to rub together.
What is osteoarthritis and how can it be treated?" role="heading" aria-level="2
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage of a joint erodes (breaks down). Bones begin to rub against each other, causing pain and difficulty moving the joint. Osteoarthritis also can affect nearby bones, which can become enlarged in places. These enlargements are called bone spurs or osteophytes.
How does age affect osteoarthritis (OA)?" role="heading" aria-level="2
Age—The risk of developing OA increases with age. Gender—Women are more likely to develop OA than men, especially after age 50. Obesity—Extra weight puts more stress on joints, particularly weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees. This stress increases the risk of OA in that joint.
